Today's Tucker (Zero Carb Edition) - 30/07/09

Today was meant to be a weekly measure-up after two weeks of meat-only, but I barely had time to cook up breakfast and lunch, so tomorrow's weigh-in will have to suffice! But in the meantime, some overall feedback:

- Didn't really notice any changes, except for good energy levels - no fatigue at any point, although I haven't had much in the way of that for months now.

- No digestive issues: fewer bathroom visits, but no bloating or pain or anything uncomfortable.

Breakfast:

Lunch:

Dinner:

Yep, those are scrambled, fried egg yolks on top of the barramundi - adding eggs back into the mix! Then it'll be a little dairy, and I'll start adding vegetables back in come next Thursday.

  1. Hey, after your previous post I noticed you said you'd be climbing the carb ladder again -- was that planned from the beginning? Didn't remember it being mentioned before. Anyway, good luck on the continuing experiment; it'll be fascinating for you (and all us readers) to see how you react as you add stuff back in.

I had carbs the other day in a spontaneous experiment, probably inspired by Richard's "carb binge" he reported at Free the Animal :) Made avocado chocolate pudding for my dad and had a bite to clean the fork :) Then when I got home and there wasn't any meat in the house, and three eggs didn't satisfy me, I ended up throwing together a spoonful of cashew butter and coconut oil...and topping it off with half a banana! The fruit was almost 14 grams of carb by itself, with a total of 20 for the day. But I consider the experiment a success in every way, since I didn't notice any bad side effects (TMI - other than brief larger BM), though it would have been nice to measure my blood glucose. Maybe next time? Back on ZC now with no cravings/other issues, though I may have carby days like this every few months. We'll see...

Heh, apologies for rambling on like this in your blog, but I'm trying not to turn my LJ into the Zero Carb Chronicles :) Hopefully relevant to our interests!

  2. I do love my meat but not sure I could do the no carb thing for long! Would miss my veggies for sure!

  3. Hey froggy,

No, this experiment had no set plans, it was just a ride to see what impact ZC had on my body, etc. Since I haven't felt all that different, I'm going to gradually add foods back in to see if they cuse me any problems that I didn't notice when I eliminated them. Certainly not planning to 'climb the carb ladder' in the Atkins sense - I will add a few veggies back in, maybe just for one meal a day, but dairy, fruit and nuts will remain very rare, special treats I'd say at this point. My only hard-and-fast rules are: no grains, no sugar, no starchy veg, no legumes.

Thanks for relating your mini-experiment - I'd certainly hope that the adaptive nature of the human body could handle 20g carbs on occasion :) I think I could handle a bit of sugar if I 'had to' (I always wonder if restaurants have slipped something into the gravy/marinade etc, but I don't obsess if I can't avoid it), but I wonder if my body would forcibly reject grains at this point. I can imagine a slice of pizza or sandwich giving me all kinds of problems, despite the fact that I never had digestive issues before, just weight issues. Wonder if it's healthier to expect negative reactions to help resist temptation, not that carbs tempt me anymore...

    Hey Cat,

I thought I would miss my veggies, but after a couple of days of wanting to taste zucchini and cabbage, it completely disappeared. That's been the most surprising outcome of all.

That sounds exactly like what I'll most likely do on those occasions I might stray from the zero carb path. I'm definitely convinced the less fiber the better, especially the insoluble kind :)
